Dare to Be Different: Why Your Pet Store Brand Name Matters More Than You Think

During a recent strategy session with a new client planning to launch a chain of pet stores across the UAE and wider GCC, we found ourselves discussing something that many entrepreneurs overlook—the brand name.

It started with a simple challenge.

"There aren't many good domain names left that include the word pet."

Should the business use a name based around Paws? But would that unintentionally exclude birds, reptiles, fish, or other pets? Could people even hear it as "Pause"?

What about Tails? Could customers mistake it for a bookshop or a children's store?

Before long, we had gone down a rabbit hole (excuse the pun) exploring what makes a memorable brand.

Does Your Name Really Matter?

Absolutely.

In today's market, your name is often your first impression. It's what people remember, search for online, recommend to friends, and associate with your customer experience.

The UAE pet retail landscape is incredibly competitive. Most stores stock similar products, carry the same leading brands, and compete on comparable pricing.

So if everyone sells the same products...

Why should customers remember you?

My Own Experience

Several years ago, I launched a pet accessories brand called Hanz & Oley.

The name wasn't chosen because it described what we sold. It was personal—it was named after my own dogs.

From a branding perspective, that might sound like a disadvantage.

People didn't instantly know what Hanz & Oley meant.

But something unexpected happened.

Customers asked.

"Who are Hanz and Oley?"

That single question created a genuine conversation.

Instead of trying to "sell" to customers, I found myself telling a story. The brand became memorable because it had personality, authenticity, and meaning.

The products—collars, leads, and harnesses—were obvious once customers walked into the store. The name didn't need to explain the category.

It simply needed to make people curious.

Curiosity is a powerful marketing tool.

Don't Blend Into the Crowd

Too many businesses choose safe, descriptive names because they believe customers need to know exactly what they sell.

But if your name looks and sounds like every other pet business...

...you're simply another place to buy dog food.

Think about it this way.

When you need a bottle of milk, you rarely care which supermarket you stop at.

Milk is milk.

Unfortunately, that's exactly how many pet retailers position themselves.

In a relatively small market like the UAE, where many retailers stock almost identical product ranges, competing on products alone is becoming increasingly difficult.

Be the Brand People Remember

Standing out isn't just about having competitive prices.

It's about creating an experience.

Great customer service.

Knowledgeable staff.

Engaging marketing.

Consistent branding.

And a name that people remember long after they've left your store.

The strongest brands aren't always the most descriptive.

They're the most memorable.

Dare to Be Different

The businesses that succeed tomorrow won't necessarily be the ones that follow industry trends.

They'll be the ones brave enough to challenge them.

Don't choose a name simply because it contains the word pet.

Choose a name that tells a story.

One that sparks curiosity.

One that starts conversations.

One that people remember.

Because memorable brands build loyal customers.
